The project implements what is outlined in the regional call for the urban redevelopment program for sustainable affordable housing, in which the Municipality of Cairo and ARTE participated and received funding. The Program entails an intervention that involves the construction of a four-story building comprising 9 apartments available for moderate rent with a perpetual constraint, in addition to redefining the existing public space bordering the intervention area.
The design is inspired by principles of significant compositional simplicity, aiming to bring about a sense of order in relation to the diverse presence of typical architecture associated with affordable housing that characterizes the area. Nonetheless, the new structure seeks to establish its own distinct personality by utilizing contextualized external finishes, with exposed brick being employed. The facades are punctuated by openings that lighten their materiality and create effects that enliven their landscape perception.
The apartments offer layouts that predominantly cater to the average family needs of couples with children. To provide flexibility in offerings, three smaller units are also included to accommodate the demand from single occupants, young couples, or the elderly.
The building integrates with the relevant outdoor spaces, which will be developed by the implementing party as part of the intervention. These spaces are connected with the urban developments described in the other section of the program, creating a functional and enjoyable continuity of the public spaces in the area.
