The new Piazza Carducci defines the connecting space between the historic centre, the Scalinata degli Alpini and Piazza Aldo Moro with a strong north-south orientation: it is a large public area that goes beyond the concept of a square defined within an urban void to assume the role of an urban public space, extended beyond the ‘boundaries’ of the built fronts and branching out into the lateral interstices.
In this logic, the square becomes an urban promenade rising from the station towards the stairway in a sequence of architectural and functional ‘episodes’, elements enriching the public space in relation to the existing commercial activities and public services.
The project eliminates the hierarchies dictated by street directions, aligned trees and a functional subdivision of the pavement; it contrasts the rigidity of the built fabric with a ‘free’ area with curvilinear geometries and significant green spaces, in continuity with the other gardens and parks of Conegliano.
