In the heart of the village of Imperia Oneglia, a stone’s throw from the harbor, an ambitious architectural and functional recovery project of the old Andrea Doria Civic Market comes to life. The pivotal objective of the project was to return a symbolic place to the city, enhancing its historical charm and enriching it with new spaces for the community by providing for the redevelopment of the original structure, with the recovery of typical architectural elements and the inclusion of new multifunctional areas such as gastronomic areas, retail area and outdoor spaces for social events, with a strong link to the local seafaring and culinary tradition.
The restoration project of the market building includes the recovery of the facades and rooms on the ground floor and basement as well as the re-functionalization of the rooms from the architectural, plant engineering and structural point of view.
The new building is configured as a market characterized for the sale of local and quality products, excellences chosen on the basis of km 0 production and processing, and as a new point for the cultural promotion of the area, which can become a reference for the dissemination of local traditions and agricultural and gastronomic-craft activities of the city community.
Inside, about eighteen stands of different sizes are planned for retail, made with standardized and flexible custom-designed furniture to adapt to different merchandise categories, and a small supermarket (of about 130 square meters of sales area) located in the basement.
It is also planned to use the roof as the city’s elevated “new plaza” through the insertion of an elevator and a metal staircase connecting the various levels of the building vertically.
